Robot Love

God is not simple. Religion is. And for too many people, religion is enough.

I used to wonder about religious requirements. The Jews in the Old Testament had SOOOO MANY ceremonious requirements to follow God. Every month, every sin, every business transaction, relationship, disease, you name it - everything was shrouded in religious requirements.

Now compare that to today, when every Christian just needs to know the Romans road to salvation: believe in your heart, confess with your mouth. Go to church. Has God loosened his requirements to facilitate our overall growing laziness as a society?

You go to school for a decade to get a PhD. You train ruthlessly to become a Navy Seal. But the only requirement to become one of God's own children is to say grace? There are harder rules than that for keeping a friendship together.

So, I guess religion, then... isn't friendship. It's ritual. It's a one-person dealy-o.

In Terminator 3, Arnold (the machine) is confused over Jon Connor's rivalry with a girl. He says (in perfect Arnold speech) "I don't understand. She is a healthy female of proper breeding age."

My point is, it is just as hard for a person of religion to know God as it is for a robot to understand love (Wall-e doesn't count, you guys.)

That's why God invites us to test Him, love Him, get to know Him. Because there is a lot to know, love, and discover. The Romans road to salvation is only adding God as a friend on Facebook. He wants to be your roommate.

Don't let religion be enough for you. Get intimate.
